Octopus Information

Octopus is a mollusk that has a soft body and eight tentacles around its mouth. its name comes from a Greek word that means eight feet. They form a group of mollusks in the same class as cuttlefish, nautilus and squid. Octopi live chiefly in the Mediterranean and China seas, and off the coast of the West Indies, the Hawaiian Islands and western North America. The eight armed creature is considered one of the smarter members of the undersea world. The body of the octopus is remarkable in the way it can change color and pattern to camouflage itself or threaten potential enemies. Octopi can alter their shape so that they look like long thin sea fish. The octopi's eight arms are not used for movement since the octopus uses a water fueled jet system to propel itself.  The common octopus has a soft pear shaped body joined to rhe head by a short neck. In the head are two eyes. It breathes by means of gills. The tentacles around the mouth are joined at the base by a web. On the underside of each tentacle lie two rows of sucker disks with which the octopus seizes its prey. The octopus eats crab, lobsters and fish.
