Most people have encountered opposums along the road usually at night, maybe in the backyard, or possibly sometimes in a garage or in rare cases in a house. Opossums are not a popular animal however they serve an extremely important part in the life cycle and web of life. Opossum are a very unique animal the United States and are a special part of our animal education.
The opossum has the unique distinction of being the only North America Continent's only marsupial, meaning females have a pouch near their bellies to carry and nurse their babies. In that special way opossums are similar to Kangaroos. Opossums are generally about the size of a large house cat, with greyish fur, dark eyes, long tails, and pointed noses. Opossums are omnivorous meaning they eat both meat and plant foods. They feed primarily on insects, rodents, fruits and vegetables. They do not live very long lives as they are have few defenses and have many predators.
Personally we have witnessed Opossums drinking water from our bird bath, and carrying babies on it's back along the fence line. Both encounters were at night at most encounters with opossums tend to be during the quietest hours of very late night.
